Director of Music/Organist

Part-time
Catholic Preferred but Not Required

​

St. Mary Catholic Church in Delaware, Ohio, is seeking a Director of Music/Organist/Choir Director.  
This is a Part Time position scoped at up to 20-25 hours per week. Some hours are fixed (playing organ
and leading singing at weekend masses) and other hours are flexible.  Local candidate expected
(relocation expenses not provided.)

Key Requirements:

  • Select one appropriate set of antiphons and hymns from the approved parish missalette (Source &
    Summit) to be used at all masses (entrance, offertory, communion, recessional) and tying into
    themes of the weekend’s readings whenever possible. 

  • Create weekly hymn packet (using Source and Summit site or whatever format is preferred) and
    email out to choir list and parish office by the Tuesday before the weekend masses.

  • Manage scheduling of cantors and any accompanists needed at three weekend masses with music
    (Saturday 4:30pm, Sunday 9:00am, 11:30am), weddings and funerals (2-3 per month), and major
    holy days and vigils (approximately 7-10 per year)

  • Conduct one 60-90 minute choir rehearsal per week to teach volunteer parish singers upcoming
    hymns, polyphony, and liturgical music

  • Play organ accompaniment to hymns and mass parts as well as prelude, postlude at parish masses
    with music: weekends (Saturday 4:30pm, Sunday 9:00am, 11:30am), weddings and funerals (2-3
    per month), and major holy days (approximately 7-10 per year)

  • If unable to play some of masses in scope, schedule a substitute accompanist.

 

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s (or advanced degree) in Music, with a background in Catholic Liturgical Music

  • Experience in playing organ 

  • Ability to extend, adjust, modulate, transpose a great advantage

  • Familiarity with Catholic mass parts in both English and Latin

  • Ideally the candidate is a practicing Roman Catholic and participates in parish life

 

Compensation
A combination of salary for administrative responsibilities and stipends for all liturgies played.
Director of Music is first choice for all liturgies, but can schedule substitutes as desired. Rate
commensurate with background and experience. The position is open and the candidate can begin
immediately or at a negotiated time. 

 

Interviews will consist of a panel interview with the selection committee, an audition, and possibly
playing an actual Mass.
